Poland - June 2009 - An evening walk

On the day I arrived in Poland I had an evening walk through the forest and surrounding countryside.

Immediately on leaving the house a Tree Sparrow was seen in the lane and a bit further on 4 Yellowhammers were on the telegraph wires. Skylarks were singing in and above the fields and a White Wagtail was also seen.

In the first forest area (mainly coniferous) only Chaffinches were heard and a Robin.

Along the lane several Swallows were flying around low over the fields of Rye and Barley. Also seen were Rooks and Starlings.

In the next main area of forest there were more Chaffinches, Great Tits, Blackbirds and both a
Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff were heard close together. After leaving the forest a Jay was seen and also a Hare.

As we headed up the track to a small road some Meadow Pipits were on the ground in the sandy soil. We followed the road to where a Storks nest was seen a couple of years ago and were delighted to see it occupied once again with a adult bird and 3 young.

As we passed the nest the other adult Stork flew up from the field where it had been feeding to join the others in the nest.

A little further on I heard the familiar "jangling keys" sound of a Corn Bunting and soon located it on some telegraph wires.

With the light fading and dark clouds looming we headed back to the house, not quite making it back before it started raining.
